The mandatory national standard for car door handles has made new progress. On September 24th, the Equipment Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions on the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Requirements for Automotive Door Handle" (hereinafter referred to as the "Requirements") and three mandatory national standard modification forms.
The "Requirements" clearly stipulate that "the door handle of each car door should have a hand operating space relative to the surface of the vehicle body in any state, and the operating space should not be less than 60mm × 20mm × 25mm". Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the Passenger Car Association Branch, analyzed to the Daily Economic News reporter, "This should be a clear ban on fully concealed door handles
Recently, reporters found during market visits that many models currently on sale use fully concealed door handles, including popular models such as the all-new Xiaopeng P7 (configuration | inquiry), Haifeng 07DM-i, and Zhijing L7. A Buick brand dealer told reporters, "Fully concealed door handles are almost a standard feature of new energy vehicles, and many people are looking at or buying cars with this design in mind. Currently, other styles of door handles cannot be optionally selected

Mechanical exterior door handle needs to be configured
Insufficient strength, potential safety risks in control logic, difficulty in identification and operation (hidden and unmarked), power failure, hand clamping... The problems exposed by fully concealed door handles in the market application process are numerous. There are also many potential escape and rescue risks brought about by these issues, such as power outages in accidents such as collisions and fires, which can cause the electric exterior door handles and electric interior door handles to fail, increasing obstacles to rescue and escape; Lack of clear and uniform markings, which increases the difficulty of operation in emergency situations.
From the current perspective, although most car models have emergency handles, due to differences in their design positions and forms, as well as a lack of promotion and popularization, in emergency situations, passengers inside the car and rescue personnel outside the car may not necessarily be able to find the emergency handle to get out of trouble in a timely manner.
In general, the sensors for fully concealed door handles are located at the front of the vehicle body. If the sensors are damaged during a collision, the concealed door handles will not be able to pop out properly. A research and development personnel from a certain domestic brand told reporters that there is also a type of semi enclosed door handle, which will lose power when a huge external collision occurs, making it impossible to open the car door. As fuel vehicles have a locking structure, the locking mechanism of the door lock will automatically pop open as soon as the power is cut off.
Wei Jianjun, Chairman of Great Wall Motors, has also publicly stated, "Hidden door handles are heavy, poorly sealed, and noisy. In addition, they also require electricity to drive, and once there is a power shortage or collision, they cannot be opened
In response to the above risks, the "Requirements" clearly stipulate that "each car door (excluding the tailgate) should be equipped with a door handle with mechanical release function. The system design should meet the requirement that in the event of an irreversible restraint device deployment or power battery thermal event when the locking device is in the locked state, the non collision side door should be able to open the door through the door handle without the use of tools.
Many car companies need to adjust their relevant plans
According to public statistics, the installation rate of hidden door handles in the top 100 new energy vehicle models in China's automobile market in April this year was about 60%.

Based on current research and development, many car companies need to adjust their relevant plans. A Toyota body designer said, "We will install mechanical door handles inside the hidden door handles. In the event of a collision, people inside the car can open the doors through the mechanical door handles, and people outside the car can also open the doors through the automatically popping door handles
The "Requirements" also states that the drafting group has conducted standard verification tests on multiple vehicles, and the results show that most of the door handle products equipped by major vehicle manufacturing enterprises can be equipped with safety redundancy schemes, meeting the standard safety requirements.
The reporter noticed that the standard drafting group suggested that the implementation date of the new regulations be January 1, 2027, and set a transition period: new models applying for type approval must meet all requirements from July 1, 2027, while models that have already obtained type approval must complete the rectification before July 1, 2028. The industry believes that this arrangement not only considers the urgency of security requirements, but also gives companies enough time to adjust.
